The Ras Al Khaimah Municipality has fined 58 hairdressers across the northern emirate this year so far for flouting health rules.
The erring barbers were nabbed during surprise raids launched in different parts of the emirate in the first three months of the year, according to a top official.
Munzir bin Shukr Al Zaabi, director-general of the RAK Municipality, said the maximum number of violations were reported from women'd salons. "Recent statistics show that 32 violations were detected at women's beauty parlours in the three months as compared to 26 reported from men's salons during the same time period."
Last year 85 violations were reported from salons, and all the unfit items were seized and destroyed, said Al Zaabi. Also, hefty fines (unidentified) were imposed on the erring shops."
According to the Department of Economic Development, Ras Al Khaimah, up to 603 salons are operating in the emirate. "These include 393 for men and 210 for women."
Khalifa Mohammed Almaktoum, Manager of the Health and Environment Department at the RAK Municipality, said most of the violations spotted were health related. "Some beauty salons were found using unsafe and improper beauty materials."
The RAK civic inspectors have seized different amounts of beauty products, including expired creams, Henna, and dyes which later proved to be unfit for human consumption, he added.
"Violations at men salons included not sterilizing the shaving and cutting tools, towels being used in unhygienic way, and people found smoking inside the salons," he explained.
Almaktoum said the RAK Municipality is very strict on matters concerning public health and hygiene, and will not compromise on health-related issues as it can lead to spread of contagious diseases.
"Different fines and warning letters were issued against the erring beauty salons depending on the seriousness of the violation. Undertakings to never repeat the same violations were signed."
