As temperatures continue to climb in the UAE, it's important to remember that you're not the only one feeling punished by the heat. Your car does too. Don't neglect its needs. Here are all the things to watch out for to ensure you beat the heat and stay safe on the roads this summer.
Keep an eye on your tyres - Heat expands, so if you're looking to avoid a blowout, make sure a tyre check is your first priority. Incorrectly inflated tyres on roads that are as hot as they get in the UAE can only lead to disaster. Check the driver's side door jamb or the owner's manual to confirm the proper inflation pressure required for your vehicle. Careem Care Centre Manager Hamid Moaref suggests a good tip would be to fill your tires with nitrogen and not regular air. Nitrogen does not expand as the temperature rises inside your tires, thus making them last longer.
Get your battery tested - High temperatures can really cut short a battery's shelf life. Even if you don't notice the minor signs of a worn-out battery - such as when your engine struggles to turn over - it's always recommended to have it tested at the beginning of summer, so you don't have to deal with breakdowns in the middle of highways or when you're least expecting it.
Top up coolant fluids - No, it's not just the car's water level that needs to be checked regularly. It's important to check on its coolant levels too, in order to ensure it has access to adequate lubrication and can keep your vehicle from overheating in the summer. If you're attempting to do this on your own, make sure that your car's engine is cold before you open the tank's cap, and that you're using the right coolant.
Park in the shade - As much as is possible, always ensure your car is not parked out in the blazing sun, as the fierce temperatures are often responsible for faded paint, discoloured interiors and cracks on the armrest or dashboard. If you don't have easy or regular access to a shady spot, consider purchasing a car cover or, at the very least, a sun shade.
