While running, cross-fit, and the gym might be the favourite exercise routine for many, it could get repetitive and monotonous after a while. However, one can keep the excuses aside as Dubai's fitness landscape offers a wide variety of unique fitness classes to keep the heart rate high.
Here are some of the most off-the-beaten-path exercises fitness enthusiasts can try for the ongoing 30x30 Dubai Fitness Challenge.
Prama
If you're a fan of whack-a-mole arcade games, then, this one is for you. "Despite only being 45 minutes per class, Prama can burn up to 1000 calories with its high-intensity programme," said Prama fitness instructor at Fairmont The Palm Ronald Ortega. The hotel was the first to install this circuit-style training that uses lights, sound and sensors in the workout.
Ortega said, "Prama basically incorporates music, lights, and sensors into the workout, making it interactive, motivational, and immersive experience. Basically, it's a circuit training base where the marking on the floors indicate the intensity of the exercise."
"The combination of numbers and the lights are on the wall and on the floor indicates a target you need to reach. You need to follow the lights and tap and as fast as you can. It also improves your reflexes. It is a cross between arcade and playground games," added Ortega. Launched in 2016, thousands of people have attempted Prama classes.
Moon Yoga
Newspaper journalist and yoga practitioner Melanie Swan has been organising 'full moon yoga' event every month on the beach at Fairmont The Palm for two years. Swan said, "It is an experiential event, so it helps reach many who would otherwise not be exposed to yoga."
She added, "I always combine breathing exercises (pranayama) with a dynamic physical (asana) practice, a vinyasa flow, and finish with meditation at the end, so people feel the all-round effects of this diverse practice. The session is 90-minutes long and enables us to go deeper than a usual 60-minute class."
Full moon yoga practitioners believe the full moon is known to have very special healing properties in the spiritual community. Commenting on performing yoga during the fitness challenge, Melanie said, "This is truly the way to make fitness a more sustainable part of people's lives."
Parkour
Parkour exercises are offered at Gravity, Parkour Dubai, and Fit Inc. in Dubai. Gravity Dubai is a friendly space that is dedicated to parkour and callisthenics training. Parkour is an activity or sport of moving rapidly through an area, typically in an urban environment, negotiating obstacles by running, jumping, and climbing.
Parkour Dubai teaches parkour to kids, adults, and the elderly to explore their environment through play. They have a space filled with a wide variety parkour obstacles, however, a lot of the group classes are practised out in the real world, which is what parkour is really about.
Other unique classes are puppy pilates, a class where fitness lovers can do with their furry best friends' hip hop cardio; cardiolates, a combination of cardio and pilates on a trampoline; swing yoga; and Kangoo jumps - where you hop like a kangaroo, to name a few.
