A 26-year-old Arab man succumbed to fatal injuries he received after a speeding driver ran him over, while waiting on the roadside of Wakalat road in Ras Al Khaimah early on Saturday.
According to a senior police officer, the victim was waiting on the road side along with his Emirati friend after another car rammed into them at the Wakalat or Agencies area here.
Col Ali Saeed Al Alkeem, director of the traffic and patrol department, RAK police, late on Saturday said the mishap took place around 12:30 am on the Wakalat road.
"The Central Operations Room of the RAK Police was alerted about a collision involving two cars; the first was driven by an Emirati young man while the second was driven by an Asian man."
The passengers in both cars got down to check the impact of the accident, he added. "While waiting for the traffic patrol on the roadside, a speeding pick-up car driven by an Asian man rammed into the Arab young man who was travelling in the same car of the Emirati youth."
The erring motorist did not stop to offer help to the victim he ran over, Col Alkeem said.
"Instead, he fled the scene and left the Arab young man bleeding until he died on the spot."
Another driver luckily tracked the speeding driver, and reported the accident to the police, he indicated. "A traffic patrol rushed to the scene and arrested the erring pick-up driver who was blamed for running over the victim and fleeing the scene."
Col Alkeem urged the public to stop any accident they get involved in.
"This is mainly applicable to run-over accidents which is just a traffic violation whereas fleeing the scene is a crime."
Offering condolences, he called upon all motorists to observe all traffic rules and regulations.
"Speeding is one of the main reasons blamed for so many fatal traffic accidents."
