The Sharjah Police have confiscated 155 cars for various serious traffic violations since the beginning of November and made its owners keep them at their homes after installing GPS trackers to detect the movement of the vehicles.
This was revealed by Major Abdul Rahman Khater, director of media and awareness department, during a tour organised by Sharjah Police traffic department to brief mediapersons about its services.
He explained that the owners of the confiscated cars will have to pay only the fines imposed due to violation. However, the violator will not be charged for the GPS tracker device installed in the car. The police have only granted a stipulated 50 metre space at the seized car owner's house to move the vehicle. If a car moves beyond this, it would send an alert signal to the police and the confiscation period would be doubled, he added.
The police will also remove the licence plate from the car and circulate the registration number across the UAE.
Lt Saud Al Shaiba, deputy director of traffic department, stressed that the Sharjah Police recently introduced these rules as they were grappling with severe lack of space to house seized vehicles in its impoundment lot. "The traffic police are making huge efforts to develop the police system to enhance the quality of life in the country," he added.
Talking about services provided to clients at the traffic departments, he pointed out that there were special facilities for people with determination, pregnant woman and elderly people such as free wheelchair, parking space and special counters to facilitate them.
He pointed out that the traffic department consists of four sections, including traffic and patrol, control and investigation, traffic engineering and rescue.
He explained that the patrols are deployed in all intersections of the city during peak hours in the mornings and evenings to regulate traffic and prevent jams.
The investigation and control section includes a traffic committee that investigates fatal and serious accidents. The panel also coordinates with hospital on the condition of the injured to prepare accurate and fair report and refer it to the traffic court.
As part of the tour, the reporters were also briefed about the data entry system of violation tickets which are issued by the patrols deployed on the road. The officers, who are assigned to enter the fine tickets information, have specific security code which cannot be shared with anyone.
The engineering section studies a road for construction improvement and decides on the detours or diversions.
Rescue teams are in charge of saving people injured during serious accidents. They are also in charge of controlling and monitoring companies that hire Jet Ski to ensure safety for the people.
