A supermarket vendor is standing trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance for allegedly molesting a 10-year-old girl.
The Dubai public prosecution accused the 23-year-old Indian vendor of groping the Kenyan girl on January 10 this year.
The girl's mother told prosecutors that on the day of the incident, she asked her daughter to buy some bread from the supermarket in their building.
"It was around 10am. She came back a few minutes later, shaking and looking scared. She told me to call the police," the mother said.
Recounting what her daughter told her, she said: "She saw him in the lift as the supermarket employees stay in an accommodation on the same floor. After she bought the bread, he told her to wait then followed her to the lift where he groped her and grabbed her by the mouth."
The girl said the defendant touched her on purpose as he kept staring at her since she took the lift. "I could not scream for help because he covered my mouth with his hand," she told the investigator.
Her parents checked the building's security footage, which captured the worker walking out of the lift behind the girl, then following her later. They called the police and the defendant was apprehended. He has been detained since then.
A complaint was filed at Al Qusais police station.
The vendor will be sentenced on February 20.
