A 20-per cent rise has been recorded in the number of seized cars in 2020 as compared to 2019, the Ajman Police have revealed.
The police seized 6,934 vehicles, including those involved in various crimes and those found flouting traffic rules, during 2020. In 2019, the department confiscated 5,766 vehicles for reckless driving as well as other violations.
Major-General Sheikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of Ajman Police, said the vehicles were impounded as part of the sustained traffic inspection campaign carried out by the traffic and patrol department to ensure road safety.
"These motorists committed serious traffic violations such as jumping the red light, reckless driving, engine modification, tinting of car windows beyond permissible limit, overtaking from the wrong side, non-renewal of vehicle licence, driving under the influence of alcohol, and so on," he pointed out.
Al Nuaimi pointed out many of the breaches had been detected because of stepped-up inspections, patrolling, and the presence of more radars on highways and interior roads.
He said the total number of violations included 89 vehicles seized for reckless driving and endangering lives of others and 1,343 confiscated for engine modification.
Al Nuaimi added that during these campaigns, the police also suspended 216 driving licences in 2020, which was 57 per cent lesser than 2019, for violating traffic regulations and exceeding black points. "The police have launched a number of traffic safety awareness programmes to help curb tailbacks through social media and other platforms."

Al Nuaimi urged motorists to abide by traffic laws and avoid dangerous driving for road safety.
