There's good news for motorists in Dubai. Four minor violations are now exempt from vehicle seizures. The decision by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, will be implemented from Monday and covers four violations but could be extended to 10 depending on the nature of the offence.
So, if your car registration has expired, if you have a driving licence that needs to be renewed, a faulty tyre, or an expired insurance, your car will not be towed away. "But it would depend on the safety record of the driver and the traffic department's decision would be final," said Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Dubai Police Assistant Commander-in-Chief for operations.
Vehicles that are currently impounded and that have completed time in the yard, will be released after checking the traffic record of the motorist. "It would all depend on the safety record of the driver," said Major-General Zafeen. Owners of seized cars can approach the General Directorate of Traffic in Deira or Bur Dubai from Monday if they have only minor offences to their names.
Zafeen said seizure of vehicles ensures safety on the roads and people's lives are not put at risk by reckless drivers. "Serious violations are not exempt from confiscation, such as reckless driving, illegal racing, jumping red signals and speeding above the speed limit. This can endanger the life of the driver and other road users."
This waiver for minor offences only applies to vehicles registered in Dubai.
Dubai Police seized and impounded 1,226 vehicles last past year. He said 281 vehicles were impounded in the first quarter of 2017.
