The tunnel will be reopened on June 30. “Maintenance work in the tunnel will be carried out over two phases requiring one direction of the tunnel to be closed and diverting the traffic in each stage,” said Nabil Mohammed Salih, Acting CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency. As the agency places top priority to safeguarding the interest of road users, it has opted to close the lanes for traffic in one direction of the tunnel at a time for work, and divert the traffic to one of the two lanes for traffic in the opposite direction.
Closure on June 28-29, July 5-7
“The first phase of the maintenance works will start at the end of this week in the direction from Bur Dubai to Deira. The closure will take place on Friday (after midnight on Thursday) and continue up to 5am on June 30. Vehicular traffic will be diverted to the other direction of the tunnel in a way allowing for the flow of two-way traffic by designating one lane for each direction,” added Salih. Phase II of the maintenance works will be in the Deira-Bur Dubai direction on July 5 (after midnight on Thursday) and will continue up to 5am on July 7.
Traffic will be diverted to one of the two lanes in the other direction. Salih called on motorists to cooperate and exercise care and caution while driving through the tunnel, and assured them that the impact of the partial closure on the traffic flow would be limited.
“This maintenance process is vital and complements the RTA’s efforts to upgrade the capacity of the traffic facilities, which requires a continual maintenance and upgrading of the infrastructure,” he said.
