Motorists who approached the traffic police in Sharjah with a sinking heart to pay fines for violating road regulations were revved up to learn that their misdemeanours had been forgiven. As part of the Gulf Traffic Week (GTW), that started from March 9, the Sharjah Traffic Police gave a pleasant surprise to many errant motorists by waiving some of their traffic fines. Instead, drivers who went to the department to pay their fines received a stamped receipt — free.
The waivers were for lesser offences like blocking the road, unauthorised parking and driving without the seat belt on.
The campaign with the slogan “Our aim is your safety” will continue till March 14.
Major Khalid Al Kay, head of the GTW committee, said the initiative aims to raise motorists’ traffic awareness. The fine waiver intends to change the negative perception people have of the traffic week as a drive organised only for collecting fines.
