The Roads and Transport Authority, Dubai has announced completion of 25 per cent of construction work on the main Shaikh Zayed Road diversions, as well as 70 per cent of the overall road-works in the area, in preparation for the launch of the Dubai Water Canal.
The authority is currently carrying out construction work on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi lanes of the Shaikh Zayed Road near Al Safa Park, pending the completion of phase 1 of the Dubai Water Canal project. The government body also announced that the one kilometre road will fully launch at the end of October, and that the works until then will not cause any disruption to traffic.
Maitha Obaid bin Udai, CEO of the Roads and Transport Authority, said that work on the canal project is on target and that construction of the northern bridge near the metro line on SZR towards Dubai will begin soon.
The project is divided into phases, the first involves the construction of bridges over the canal along SZR, containing eight lanes in each direction. The bridges are expected to measure eight meters high once completed which will allow for free maritime movement below. The second phase will see bridges built over Jumeirah and Al Wasl roads, which will contain six and four lanes, respectively.
