Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Sunday announced that motorists will not be required to display paper parking tickets in their cars after today in areas where parking machines are being updated to include an interactive touch screen.
"No paper parking tickets on the vehicle's windshield after today. The parking machines are updated to include an interactive touch screen, allowing the customer to enter the vehicle's information and obtain an e-ticket, saving time and effort," the RTA said.
Parking users in areas where these new parking meters are not installed have to continue displaying their parking tickets on the windshields of their vehicles to avoid offences. However, parking fees can be paid through smart means like the smart app and text messages, which eliminate the need for displaying paper parking tickets in all areas.
The Dubai Media Office had in January announced the RTA's new plan of interactive parking meters.
The project is part of a smart transformation of the Parking Department to meet the needs of road users in line with the RTA's strategic goals: 'Smart Dubai and People Happiness'.
The RTA will install advanced parking meters in phases starting from the first quarter of this year till the end of 2022.
"The project will be an 'innovative solution' for paying parking fees without the need for a paper ticket," said the RTA in a statement earlier.
"The project comes with upgraded parking meters fitted with interactive touchscreens, enabling users to enter vehicle details and have eParking tickets issued." The implementation of the project started after the analysis of public polls conducted during the pilot run of improved parking meters in several locations. "It responds to the growing public trend of using sophisticated technology that saves the hassles of issuing and displaying paper tickets on vehicles. It also eliminates offences resulting from the improper display of parking tickets, besides enabling the payment of parking fees for motorbikes.
