The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai said in a press release that the new rules, which have been on the cards since at least last year, were imminent — and would apply to about 100,000 drivers in the short-term.
Drivers’ Licensing director of the RTA Sultan Al Marzooki said the medical tests would be conducted in several hospitals and clinics around Dubai that had been “meticulously selected” based on quality, low waiting times, processing times, the size of the wait area and location.
“The key requisite of obtaining such a permit is that the driver must have the medical fitness to practise safe driving.”
The tests would include checking levels of blood sugar and blood pressure, in addition to checks for the eyesight and other “ailments”, Al Marzooki said.
“Adopting the British Medical Standards as a model for the local standard sets the medical tests regime in Dubai at par with the systems applicable in the European community, which are viewed among the best standards around.”
The new system would be implemented in a phased manner to ensure the smooth flow and accessibility of service to customers, he said.
The first group to be targeted are the novice truck drivers, Al Marzooki said.
“The system will be electronically administered starting from carrying out medical tests, test results and up to the final issuance of occupational permits enabling drivers to drive.”
The names of approved clinics are posted on the RTA’s website, www.rta.ae, but could also be ascertained through calling the call centre toll-free on 8009090.
