Motorists across Dubai and nearby emirates are strongly urged to ditch their cars and use the more eco-friendly public transport on Sunday.
The annual Car-Free Day, now in its 10th edition, will be led by senior UAE officials and other prominent personalities who will take the Metro on February 24 - from Etisalat station to Union station, where an exhibition will be held to celebrate the occasion.
According to the Dubai Municipality (DM), which introduced the initiative in 2010, the Car-Free Day is aimed at "raising Dubai's profile among the world's eco-friendly cities by finding all sustainable and effective solutions to meet various environmental challenges".
A study revealed that a regular, four-door sedan emits nearly 140kg of carbon dioxide into the air, generating four tonnes of emissions annually and, thus, contributing to global warming.
Last year, more than 60,000 residents in Dubai, Al Ain, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah left their keys on their tables and hopped into public transport.
Some residents also joined the cause by walking or cycling to their offices to help reduce the country's carbon footprint and raise awareness on climate change.
The DM also held a social media competition where three lucky participants won an Apple watch, iPad mini and vouchers.
Other government entities also threw in their full support, including the Ministry of Community Development that provided its employees with buses to and from work at several locations including Abu Dhabi, Ajman and Sharjah. While some entities such Dubai Media City offered free parking and different prizes to those who choose to share their rides with friends.
Aisha, a government employee, who previously joined the Car-Free Day, told Khaleej Times: "Car-Free day is always an exciting time. I don't use the Metro often, but I think I should. It is convenient and I am saving on fuel."
Over the years, thousands of private cars have been taken off the road for the day as a result of the scheme.
"Not just a day, every day. Be part of this event. Stay tuned," the DM tweeted.
