A special film on Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport highlighted the efforts made by Dubai in preserving environment and natural resources and enforcing the principles of sustainable development.
Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, honoured the winners along with Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA.
Al Tayer highlighted that the award had achieved remarkable success despite its short history.
“The efforts of the Government of Dubai represented in the Roads and Transport Authority, to develop the transport infrastructure, proved both successful and effective, where the mass transit modes in the emirate of Dubai have become vital for the daily movement of residents and visitors. The number of mass transit users exceeded 367.657 million passengers in 2012, and the average daily ridership of mass transit hit one million passengers last year,” he said.
Park Won-soon, Mayor of Seoul City, delivered the keynote address and spoke about the sustainable development agenda of the government of South Korea.
The metro system in the Korean capital has been ranked among the top nine metro systems worldwide.
“The transport system is closely associated with people’s daily life, and thus it dramatically affects their quality of life and happiness. There are research results showing that the longer the commuting time, the worse the happiness level,” said the Mayor of Seoul.
“Seoul opted to establish an integrated public transportation system and opened the first Subway Line in 1974.
“This project contributed to rendering the city easily accessible from all directions,” he said.
At the end of the event, Mattar Al Tayer presented a trophy to Shaikh Maktoum in recognition of the continuous support accorded to RTA and his patronage for the Awards.muaz@khaleejtimes.com
