The Dh250 million bridge project, completed by the Ministry of Public Works as part of the development initiatives by the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was completed as per the schedule, said an official at the ministry.
He said the project was part of the Dh16 billion dedicated by the President to develop the Northern Emirates’ infrastructure.
The official said Al Humaidiya Bridge and intersection is important as it is located in a vital area that connects many areas in Ajman and high roads linking other emirates of the country. The execution of the project is a strategic choice as it would solve the traffic congestion for residents of Ajman and motorists heading towards other emirates.
He said that the project includes the development of Al Humaidiya intersection that connects Khalifa Road with Shaikh Maktoum and Shaikh Zayed Roads, without any signals. The project also includes a number of bridges and tunnels that improve the linking with other emirates.
To facilitate the traffic to be free of traffic signals, six bridges and main tunnel to connect Shaikh Maktoum and Shaikh Zayed Roads were executed, in addition to five pedestrian subways to ensure safety for pedestrians.
Ali Alwan, Director-General of the Ajman Police, said that police patrols would be deployed today at midnight on the bridge and surrounding areas to divert traffic in order to facilitate the opening ceremony. Yahya Al Reyaysa, Director-General of the Ajman Municipality, appreciated the initiatives of the President and said that the project is one of the biggest in the emirate and would definitely contribute to the emirate’s infrastructure development and solve the traffic congestion.
He pointed out that the Department of Public Works is also planning to start another project, paving the Al Nuaimiya Road in the Nuaimiya area, in cooperation with the Ajman Municipality and Directorate of Planning.
Residents who have endured traffic disruptions throughout the project were hopeful that their troubles with dangerous turns were over, with many hoping for a decrease in traffic congestion following completion of the bridge.
“The turns to alternative routes were dangerous and so often I found accidents on these areas,” said Faisal Mohamoud, an Ajman resident who regularly uses the road.
