This was announced by Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Director of General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police, during a press conference. He said during the three-month campaign, titled ‘Cross Safely’, the traffic police will spread awareness among workers about pedestrian safety. The police will also help companies deliver lectures to workers, especially companies whose workers have suffered accidents while crossing the road.
He said that the traffic department is ready to provided the jackets to the companies, and that employees must wear them. He said the importance of wearing these high visibility jackets would enable the driver to see pedestrians at night, especially as many of the workers and cyclists cross highways at night.
He said that 20 bicycle riders are killed on roads every year because they are not cycling on the main roads and highways, although there are special tracks for bicycles.
He added that they sustained serious injuries on main roads and highways, even if they were wearing a helmet. He said that 50 per cent of deaths resulted from traffic accidents that took place on highways that have six lanes.
The new timings will take effect from April 28
