The project will see an extension of the canal from Shaikh Zayed Road at Business Bay up to the Beach of the Arabian Gulf, and is to stretch 2.8 kilometres and up to 100 metres wide, the RTA said in a statement.
As part of the project, bridges rising 8.5 metres above the canal will be constructed on key roads intersecting with the canal, including a six-lane bridge in each direction of Shaikh Zayed Road, and a two-lane bridge in each direction of Wasl and Jumeirah roads.
The RTA said this would ensure reduced traffic round the clock. Marine transit stations would aso be provided throughout the canal to ease public movement.
The canal is to pass across populous areas which have facilities and services that ought to be dealt with in a professional manner, the statement said, and Al Tayer wanted to ensure the best path for the canal.
The agency also said it would carry out several improvements on the key roads intersecting the canal and surrounding areas, including Jumeirah and Al Safa neighbourhoods.
This would see the construction of roads alongside the canal, three pedestrian bridges across the canal, and footpaths on all other main bridges to be built.
The RTA also said there would be cycling and jogging tracks built, and landscaping to include greenery, benches and public relaxation areas.
The work has been endorsed by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The RTA also said it hoped the construction work would boost the odds of Dubai winning its bid to host the World Expo 2020.
This trend can be mainly attributed to factors like the growing presence of high net-worth individuals and the UAE’s removal from the FATF’s grey list
