Ras Al Khaimah — The Ministry of Public Works has opened a 13km section of the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in Ras Al Khaimah.
The work, which is part of the 44km-long road extension from Exit No. 90 in Ras Al Khaimah to Exit No. 103 in Umm Al Quwain, was completed in 35 days instead of the expected 45 days.
According to an official source, the full project developing the arterial road that connects the emirates of Ras Al Khiamah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, and Sharjah, is expected to be completed in April.
“The third lane will be relaid wile the other two lanes will undergo precautionary maintenance.”
The main road diversions have been finished at Exit No. 103 for motorists heading from Ras Al Khaimah to Sharjah, he added. “The traffic has been diverted to Emirates Road.”
As per the contract sealed with the contracting companies carrying out the project, all maintenance and development works have to be finished by the end of April this year, he noted.
“The right lanes in both directions of the road will be totally relaid because they are the most affected by heavy trucks running on the critical road, let alone the sweltering summer temperatures.”
The other two lanes are also to be repaired to be made more durable in the long run because of the heavy traffic on the road all day round, the same source stated.
“The Ministry of Public Works has instructed the companies in charge to stick to maximum three-week diversion on the road to ease motorists’ suffering, after many of them complained of the many detours.”
Some truck drivers are now using the old Etihad Road which connects Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain to avoid these diversions and heavy traffic. Drivers heading to Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi were using Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from Exit No. 103 before the end of the road diversions, he added.
