Ajman Municipality will start granting permission to owners of vacant sandy plots to turn them into private parking lots.
The decision has been taken following a large number of parking-related complaints in various parts of Ajman city.
Dr Mohammed Bin Omair, executive director of infrastructure development sector at the Ajman Municipality, said that the move takes forward municipality's efforts to develop solutions that reduce congestion on the main streets of the emirate and prevent exploitation at parking lots which affects residents.
Bin Omiar said the municipality will initially issue permissions to build private parking lots in places including Rumaila, Al Nakhla, Lwaira, Naimiya and Rashidiya, as they are the most important areas in the emirate and are witnessing construction and population boom.
The municipality will communicate directly with the owners of the lands and introduce them to specific requirements and standards besides telling them how to use their vacant lands to establish the private parking business.
Dr Bin Omair said the municipality pays great attention to finding realistic and distinctive solutions to any situation that affects the residents in the emirate. It seeks to receive suggestions of employees and customers as well as residents of the emirate and visitors to develop plans to implement them on the ground, he added.
Bin Omair said that the municipality is currently working to ensure that landlords of residential buildings provide free parking for tenants who rent an apartment or those who buy it.
The municipality is also developing a plan that will be implemented in several phases to include all areas of the emirate to facilitate organized parking, while giving landlords the opportunity to invest in their lands to develop multi-storey parking lots on them.
M Gopal, a resident of Al Zahra area, said that residents living in old buildings without parking spaces park their vehicles on vacant plots of land near their apartments. If these lands are turned into private paid parking lots and are not affordable, it will affect their budget, he added.
