The Abu Dhabi Police’s Traffic and Patrols Directorate organised an awareness lecture for 210 accident-prone drivers working for six taxi companies in the Capital.
The awareness programme was part of the Abu Dhabi Police’s strategy aimed at making roads safer and address all reasons behind traffic accidents.
Captain Aisha Mohammed Al Zaabi, Traffic Awareness Officer at the Public Relations Section, emphasised the directorate’s commitment to conduct awareness programmes among taxi drivers in the Capital to promote a safe driving culture, within the traffic awareness plan for 2013. This plan aims to increase taxi drivers’ adherence to traffic laws, notably the need to leave sufficient safe distance between their cabs and other vehicles; in addition to acquainting them with the risks associated with failure to comply with the designated passenger drop off and pick up areas on highways, sudden swerves and all common causes of road accidents.
Al Zaabi said the lectures were delivered by Assistant Abdul Rahim Al Hammadi from the Public Relations Section at the directorate. They focused on the important role of taxi drivers in reflecting a positive image on the highway, by adhering to traffic safety rules and observing legal speeds on internal and external roads.
Al Zaabi reiterated the need to be cautious and vigilant while driving; to respect lane discipline and avoid changing lanes unless making sure the road is clear; avoid sudden stops to pick up passengers, and to avoid flashing their headlights to force a driver ahead of them to give way. Concluding, she urged taxi drivers to regularly check the condition of their vehicle’s tyres and to change damaged, worn-out and expired tyres. -news@khaleejtimes.com
