Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Director of the General Department of Traffic, said that some motorists are reluctant to obey the traffic rules, despite continuous warnings from officials against any kind of actions that distract them so that they will not endanger the lives of other road users.
Al Zafin said that the police aim to curb accidents caused by the use of mobile phones, which endanger the lives of motorists who do not concentrate on driving.
He also said that using mobiles is one of the major causes of fatal and severe accidents so the police take strict action against violators.
He said: “When people send SMS or talk, they may stop thinking. They may jump traffic signal or ignore any other traffic instruction.” He also added, as per Article 35 of traffic law, the violators would be fined Dh200 and they will be issued four black points.
The police often organise campaigns to spread awareness among public about the harmful effects of these violations and after that, it will take strict action against those who do not abide by the law. Al Zafin said that the Dubai Police organised a campaign titled ‘Do not call until you reach’.— amira@khaleejtimes.com
