Dubai — A total of 1,400 tram violations were recorded within 90 days of the establishment of Dubai Tram, according to Dubai’s traffic police.
Also, 269 transport security officials and 16 patrols were assigned to control the tram movement round-the-clock, said Colonel Jamal Al Banai, acting director of the General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police.
He said that according to the decision of the Executive Council of the year 2014 pertaining to regulation of tram, additional violations were added including a fine of Dh2,000 and not to exceed Dh5,000 if the driver jumped the red light on the tram line without causing an accident.
The second violation is related to pedestrians where the person will be fined Dh1,000 if he crosse from non-designated areas on the tram line. The regulations are issued on the decision of Shaikh Hamadan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council. According to article 18, any person who jumps the red signal at the intersection of the tram and cause an accident leading to death will be fined Dh10,000 or maximum Dh30,000 and the driving licence of the person will be suspended for 30 days and not exceed one year.
A driver who jumps the traffic signal at the tram intersection and causes an accident that leads to injuries will be fined a minimum of Dh5,000 and not exceed Dh15,000 while the driving licence will be suspended for 30 days and not more than six months.
He called on the public to cooperate with the police and to call the operation room on the toll free number 800 4353 to report violations. He urged people to be careful when crossing the tram line and abide by traffic laws, avoid speeding, reckless driving or jumping traffic signals that could endanger people’s life.
