I have to confess that I've stayed away from the theatre for most of 2020, and so after the lockdown when the local theatre community started to put up shows, I stayed tucked at home and wished them luck. But, an upcoming show, on the weekend of 15-16-17 October, caught my attention for a few reasons. Titled, Kaumudi, this one is in Hindi, and any attempt to revive arts in the language always gets a thumbs-up from yours truly. So, kudos to Udaan, a local theatre group, to bring this one alive. And the other reason being the cast features some of my most favourite actors, whose couple of performances I have watched in well, Hindi. Will these actors and others bring back the audience to a Hindi-loving audience? The weekend shall tell, but here's what comes to my mind when I think of these five names (in alphabetical order!)
Amitt Kummar: Relatively new to Dubai's theatre circle. I met him in late 2019 at an audition, where his raw acting skills and theatrical voice, found a fan in me. We did end up working together. You must have seen him in the Ethihad Airways commercial, and loved it.
Apoorva Mehra: This actor can pull off any role, with ease and comfort, or at least she makes it seem so. Recently, during the lockdown, her videos on social media as she attended workshops with an Indian theatre group, spoke of her skill.
Benjamin Samuel: Seen often on the stage, he's the name that comes to mind when you think of productions in Hindi like Aandhon Ka Haathi, Natya Sandhya, Ek Raat and Yaar Julahe, to name a few.
Jeett Dhindsa: This actor can dance and enjoy it as he does it. His ease in delivering dialogues, and adding a few impromptu expressions and nuances, as he rehearses, is just what the director in me dreamt of as we worked together.
Lavina Jaswani: I saw her perform in Hindi for the first time in 2017 for a play called Chuhal by Manav Kaul, and instantly fell in love with her work. As we worked together, I saw her transform from one role to another, swiftly.
Nilesh Deshpande: I first saw him on stage at Short + Sweet 2016 UAE, where he performed a play titled Madaari. He was nominated for the Best Actor award that year. With over a decade of experience on stage, his command on stage leaves an impact on the audience.
A dramatic and musical extravaganza, Kaumudi, blends the splendour and the travails of theatre. It is written by playwright Abhishek Majumdar and will be directed by Karan Sharma and choreographed by Mahua Chauhan.
The play and will be staged at a performing art space in Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, Dubai.
