A Dubai student has brought home another bronze medal for the second year in a row after competing at the 2017 International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) held recently in the Netherlands.
Kaoushik Murugan, 15, Grade 10 student at Delhi Private School-Dubai, grabbed bronze medal in a challenge where students from 54 countries answered questions around the theme 'Water and Sustainability'.
The IJSO is a science and technology olympiad where students aged 15 and below compete with one another over a 10-day period. Each country is represented by a team consisting of three to six members. The competition is held annually in different countries. Last year, Murugan won his first bronze medal in Bali, Indonesia.
"I am very happy with my second Olympiad medal," Murugan told Khaleej Times. "This year's competition was nothing like I have experienced before. Everyone was fierce, competitive and armed to the teeth, so to speak.
"I was blessed enough to have been trained by some of the finest teachers from International Olympiad Foundation (the official body for shortlisting students from the UAE to international math and science olympiads). My parents and the UAE have given me so much that many students could only dream of. I dedicate my medal to my parents and the UAE," he added.
Murugan noted that the IJSO has not only honed his knowledge in science but his interpersonal skills as well. "I want other students to be able to participate in science olympiads as this will also boost their chances of getting into good universities abroad for higher studies," he added.
Five other UAE students competed with Murugan at the IJSO. Anuradha Asokan Nair (Indian High School, Dubai), Niranjan Jayanath (The Millennium School, Dubai), Mohammed Numan (Our Own English High School, Sharjah), Pranav Chandrasekhar (Our Own High School, Al Warqa'a) and Sanoja Pai (JSS Private School, Dubai). The UAE delegation was headed by Subramanian Krishnamoorthy from IOF.
Aside from competing at the IJSO, the six UAE students had an educational tour to Duiven, Delft, Rotterdam, Waterschappen, Van Hall Larenstein en vitens and Amsterdam. They were also taken to schools to have discussions with European teachers and students.
