Skipper Mohammed Zamrood powered Emirates National School(ENS)-Sharjah to a 2-1 triumph over New Indian Model School (NIMS)-Dubai in the final of the Ministry of Education/UAE Inter School Sports Association Volleyball Championship at Salahauddin indoor hall in Dubai.
The arch-rivals in the school set-up here dished out yet another thriller. In the first set, NIMS-Dubai, coached by schools volleyball pioneer in the UAE - Nishtar - played very well with better all-round skills to win 25-23.
ENS coach Shine Antony had alternate plans for his squad in the second set and despite having trailed early in the crucial game, he urged his lads to play a tighter and more controlled game to clinch the issue at 25-21.
ENS-Sharjah had 15-year-old Zamrood in fine touch in the rubber where his lethal jump serves saw the opponents confused in the receiving department. The captain inspired his teammates to dig and block better, before his side ran out winners by the narrowest of margins at 15-13. Jeswin, Abhishek, Sourav, Sohail, Aslam and Jeevan added depth with fine mid-court retrievals and setups at the net.
"Volleyball tournaments such as this is a must for the sport to grow here and the Ministry showed the schools here by leading from the front this year with a well managed event," said Antony.
"We were shaken up quite a few times by the strategy and counter play put into effect by the well trained NIMS squad. Luckily, all of us were able to come out of the indifferent form we showed in the first set, and during the early parts of the second before overcoming our strong rivals," said Zamrood.
