Al Wahda coach Javier Aguirre said that the victory against Al Wasl was vital in their push for third spot in the Arabian Gulf League, especially after they had dropped points in their previous two fixtures.
'The Clarets' scored a convincing 3-0 win over 'The Cheetahs' at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi late on Friday night to move back to third in the League table, ahead of Al Nasr. And although Al Wahda currently sit third, the fight for position is by no means over just yet with two rounds still left. Also, Al Nasr are set to play against leaders Al Ahli and could retake third spot if they win at the Al Maktoum Stadium on Sunday night.
"We were in a bit of pressure to claim third spot, especially after Al Shabab's win over Emirates also put them in the fray. We were desperately in need of a win also because we had dropped points in the last two rounds," Aguirre said after the game.
Al Wahda were held to a goalless draw by Emirates at home before they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Al Dhafrah in the Western Region.
"Although it was not our best game of the season, the team deserved to win. Now, we have to glean six points from the remaining two fixtures if we are to finish third and make it to the AFC Champions League next season," the Mexican said.
"Al Nasr could take the third spot back again if they win against Al Ahli. So, it is vital that we shouldn't slip in our last two games and win both and get maximum points," he added.
Al Wahda make the road trip to face Al Sharjah next Friday and then play host to Bani Yas in their final fixture of the season.
Aguirre heaped praise on his young players and especially his foreign import Jorge Valdivia, who shone on the night. The Chilean international was a threat in midfield and also scored the third goal.
"I have confidence in all the young players in the team and they need to gain more experience. Also, Valdivia gave a good performance. He was in good physical condition and that was reflected in him scoring a goal," said Aguirre.
