The Abu Dhabi Sports Festival under the theme 'stay active and healthy' opened with a gala ceremony at the Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi on Thursday night.
The event is being held under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs. And with dance performances from children, aerial rope acts, freestyle football tricks and African acrobats, the ceremony like the festival had something for everyone.
The festival features 13 sporting disciplines and aims to create sports-proactive environment with more community participation.
"The Abu Dhabi Sports Council wants to make sports a part of a healthy lifestyle. Through sport we can raise awareness about the risks of obesity and diabetes," Abu Dhabi Sports Council general secretary Aref Hamad Al Awani said.
The most exciting of all events is going to be the Ramadan football tournaments. And there are two of them - the Abu Dhabi Ramadan Football Championship and the Abu Dhabi Government Ramadan Football Championship - to be held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
The Ramadan Football Championship, which is an open event, will see winners go richer by Dh300,000, the runner-up get Dh150,000 and the third place Dh50,000.
Also, the Government Ramadan Football Championship winner get Dh75,000, with Dh50,000 for second and Dh25,000 for third best.
This festival has events for spikers too. The Ramadan Volleyball Championship will see winners smash their way to Dh100,000, with second place netting Dh50,000 and third Dh25,000.
Then there is boxing, badminton, jiu-jitsu, judo, wrestling, cross-fit, cycling, shooting, basketball, skating and other track events.
"We've something for everyone - from amateurs to top athletes. Also, the winners walk away with big cash awards," he added.
