UAE-based T10 Sports Management announced the appointment of Haroon Lorgat, the former CEO of the International Cricket Council (ICC), to promote Abu Dhabi T10 League globally and develop new leagues in other countries.
Shaji Ul Mulk, founder and chairman of T10 Sports Management noted the 2019 edition of Abu Dhabi T10 League created a new record with a global viewership of more than over 200 million and 122,000 fans in attendance at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.
Mulk said following the success of his brainchild Abu Dhabi T10 League format, it was time to 'move forward'.
And Lorgat as the director for strategy and development, will be tasked with making T10 format a global brand. Mulk underlined that Lorgat with his wealth of contacts, knowledge and experience can achieve the set goals.
"He will engage with relevant authorities and stakeholders to create multiple T10 League properties in both full and associate member countries."
Lorgat is excited about his new but different role in a format he started following only from last year.
"Little did I realise how much the T10 cricket was embraced by some of the best players in the world."
Lorgat is confident the attractive 90-minute package of T10 cricket and entertainment will transcend borders of the UAE and find greater acceptance globally.
"I feel confident about the fact that many top players are beginning to look at T10 cricket as an event that they would not like to miss."
Lorgat will be in Dubai this week to discuss possibilities of international member countries playing T10 and also moot an idea of a tournament for youngsters, especially females.
"I will look to meet up with old friends and colleagues at the ICC and see what they think about having this as a development tool in an international way," Lorgat said.
The fourth edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 League will be held from January 28 to February 6 next year. Both Lorgat and Mulk are hopeful that by 2021 normalcy will be restored with no travel restrictions and the stadium will be buzzing with fans again. Mulk said: "Right now crowds are not allowed. But with the announcement of vaccines being administered, particularly in Abu Dhabi, there is optimism in terms of the possibility of crowds being allowed. We certainly hope come January end, the situation will change and we will have a large crowd to enjoy the game."
Mulk said the 10-day event will have eight teams, with discussions underway with some top teams. He assured bigger international names will be part of the tournament.
"We believe we have a very good window in the normally busy FTP to have some bigger names than we normally have," Mulk said. "The players' registration process will start in a couple of weeks. We are already getting a lot of interest and we will continue to encourage Indian players as allowed by the BCCI to participate in the T10 League."
