The stage is set for the ultimate showdown in the capital with the third and final round of the Jiu Jitsu President's Cup set to take place on Saturday at the IPIC Arena in Abu Dhabi, a Press release said.
The President's Cup was added to the action-packed 2016-2017 Jiu-Jitsu season as part of the Federation's ongoing efforts to promote Jiu-Jitsu in the UAE. While the tournament offers Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts with the opportunity to showcase their sportsmanship, it also presents the Federation with a platform to recruit talent to represent the UAE in international competitions.
With bouts beginning at 11am, this event is expected to see over 300 Emirati participants from 14 clubs across the country. Across various weight categories are 278 male and 24 female fighters, competing in white, blue, purple, and brown belt divisions. The winner of the tournament wins a special adorned trophy, with a design inspired by the Jiu-Jitsu belt. The prize money to be awarded at the President's Cup is a total of AED 800,000, with AED 200,000 awarded to the club with the most number of tallied points and medals. The second and third placed clubs will win AED 100,000 and AED 65,000 respectively.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Abdulmunam Al Hashemi, president of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Union and chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: "This event marks the end of a successful first edition of the President's Cup, and we are glad to see the role it has played to motivate more Emirati players to take up Jiu-Jitsu as a sport.
On behalf of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, we would like to wish all participants the very best of luck, and look forward to further developing athletes to proudly represent the UAE on an international stage, as our younger champions who won 13 medals at the World Championship for Aspirants and Juniors earlier this week."
