Thailand has reopened the cave where 12 young football players were trapped with their coach for nearly 3 weeks last year.
According to the Free Press Journal, the Tham Luang Cave in Northern Chiang Rai province was reopened on Friday drawing around 2,000 tourists.
"We have allowed visitors to see the mouth of the cave," said Kamolchai Kotcha, director of the local conservation office that oversees the cave. He said that the equipment left behind by rescuers may even be exhibited.
Although guests are not currently allowed beyond the entrance, officials claim to be considering surveying a safer route to allow people a deeper look. Photos from Friday's opening showed tourists at the cave's entrance, where police were alerted of the boy's presence by their bikes and backpacks.
A group of 12 young football players and their coach were trapped in this cave last June after heavy rains blocked the exit. The boys were found emaciated but alive after a 9-day rescue mission.
Several books have been written about the saga, and the first film premiered this month at a film festival in South Korea.
