Hope and humanity have been age-old companions, encouraged and energised by each other's positive energy. Without one, the existence of the other is irrelevant. Mankind has survived the worst of wounds, both natural and self-inflicted, with nothing more than hope. With hope, we've managed to reignite the flame of life after it has been all but doused by overwhelming floods, annihilating plagues, destructive wars, devastating hurricanes, and disastrous earthquakes. Hope, that one ineffable, intangible idea that often defies logic, has helped us overcome the worst of adversities and sufferings.
It's hope - and its confidant conviction - that exhorted humans to take the first steps in our space exploration journey, knowing nothing about what we may find beyond the realm of astronomical proximity. It was hope that made us study the minutest of strands in our DNA to understand our genetic makeup in order to find a cure to some of the deadliest diseases we know. There is nothing but the unfailing power of hope that propels a boat against the tide, makes grass grow in the desert sand, and inspires us to embrace the unknown.
It is to celebrate hope that His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has launched the Arab Hope Makers initiative. It seeks to celebrate and honour individuals that have helped improve communities and quality of life in the Arab world and carries a Dh1 million purse.
Thousands of individuals who have helped improve the lives of millions will be in the reckoning. Numbers, however, are not important. You may have given hope to just one soul, improved the life of just one person, but that is not in any way inferior or secondary to someone who has given hope to millions.
In line with HH's Arab Hope Makers initiative, Khaleej Times is playing its role as the UAE's media pioneer to voice the stories and tales of such unsung heroes. Tag us with
#KTcelebratesHope and #KTforGood to let us know about that person or people who gave you hope when you were at the end of your tether or helped put a smile on the face of someone you know when they had all but given up hope. Let's try to add a little more hope to humanity.
