While countries across the world are setting new single-day records in terms of Covid-infected cases, the UAE is witnessing a steady decline in the number of infections and deaths. Stay-at-home advisories have long been eased and life is returning to normalcy, albeit with masks and social distancing, which is how it should be in the Covid-era. There can be no room for complacency and authorities are asking people to be responsible to protect themselves and their loved ones. The UAE was the first country in the Middle East to register a Covid-19 positive case on January 29. The government didn't lose time and over the weeks that followed rolled out a plan on how to tackle the spread of coronavirus. Night curfew was imposed and the sterilisation campaign launched. The UAE's approach was lauded around the world and inspired countries and cities to do the same. People in the UAE, too, acted responsibly aided by the government that was clear in communicating what needed to be done. Field hospitals were erected and drive-through Covid test centres were established. More than 4.8 million tests have been conducted so far and the numbers are rising every day, which has immensely helped in the drive to identify infected people, treat them and aid in their recovery faster. We are now at a juncture where R-naught (or R0), a number that represents the average number of people infected by one infectious individual, is less than 1 for the UAE. An 'R0' below 1 suggests the number of cases is falling, possibly allowing societies to reopen. The number of fatalities is falling, too. It is a testament to the efforts of the UAE government that acted fast and followed a strategy to fight the virus.
The UAE, as we know, is among the safest countries in the world. The quick response to this pandemic has only reinforced this image. Nine out of ten residents say that they are satisfied with how the government has been dealing with the containment efforts. It speaks volumes about the trust people have in the leadership. Governments are no longer being graded by their economic might or growth, but by their ability to tackle this viral spread.
