It was in August 1990 that Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published its First Assessment Report that warned us of the impending climatic dangers to our planet if we continue to carry on with our ways of life without paying any attention to mother nature. Climate change, we were told, could lead to global warming, and increase the occurrence of heat waves, wildfires, and droughts. Thirty years on, we are grappling with climate-related issues and haven't been able to control carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases as suggested in various reports published since then. The Covid-19 pandemic may have brought our world to a screeching halt and temporarily lessened the amount of emissions, but it no way suggests that we will not return to our old ways of doing things.
Fossil fuels still supply 80 per cent of the world's energy. Melting glaciers and ice sheets are triggering an alarming rise in sea levels. The pandemic has taken our attention off such issues for now, but we should be reminded that they haven't been resolved. Climate change is still among the most pressing concerns. There's no merit in denying the issue. Instead, policymakers should pay heed to climate-related reports and work with scientists to find the best way forward. Our future can be secured only if we work together.
