Just as rain brings joy to residents of Dubai, fog is met with equal fervour among residents. Switch over to any social media platform, such as Twitter or Instagram, and you're sure to find incredible photos of the mist hanging over balconies, neighbourhoods and roads.

While the change in weather give us a unique thrill as part of the city's winter, we need to be aware of the dangers of being in such conditions - especially drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

Maintain distance between cars: In driving school, we're usually taught to maintain a distance such that you are able to see the rear tyres of the car in front of you. During foggy conditions, drivers are recommended to increase that distance by three to four times more, so that you have enough time to react, in case of debris or a sudden slow down. Fog or not, always slow down near intersections and pedestrian crossings.

Never use high beams: One of the common mistakes people make is using their high beams in the fog. You may be visible to others, but this is absolutely dangerous because the light bounces off the mist, making it even more difficult for you to view your surroundings. Use the built-in fog lights instead along with regular headlights. Note the symbol; this would be situated either on your indicator stick or as a separate button.

Plan your commute wisely: If you're heading to work, school or any other meeting where you have to commute by car, leave home early. It will save you the anxiety of being late in the unlikely case of a traffic jam and accident. If time allows it, choose to reschedule or attend a meeting at a later time when the density of the fog eases. Better safe than sorry!

Leave the car at home: Being on the road when there's thick fog can be intimidating, even for the most experienced drivers. In this case, why not take advantage of the Dubai Metro? Not only will you have a safe, comfortable and traffic-free ride to your destination, but also get a chance to view the scenery and click photos from a wonderful height.

Take extra precaution: Regardless of whether you're on a pathway or pedestrian crossing that's almost always quiet, be extra alert, as you may be in danger of speeding bicycles or cars. This is also applicable to any intersection, even though the green man at the traffic signal is on. Invest in reflective jackets and accessories for yourself, children and pets for additional caution and peace of mind.

Don't use emergency blinkers during your foggy drive, unless it's a real emergency or you need to pull over to the side. And never overtake a car during such conditions. You not only put yourself in danger, but also others around you.
