As many as 14 finals were played, starting from 1500 in front of a festive and cheering crowd as well as several die-hard rugby fans and promoters. Dubai College proved its status as the hub of rugby players when it appeared in four finals and convincingly won all the matches.
In the U-12 Cup final, DC defeated DESC 38-0; in the U-14 Cup final, DC beat JESS 15-0, in the U-16 Cup final, DC outsmarted DESC 30-12, and in the U-18 Cup final, DC prevailed over JC by 20-12. In the most thrilling and keenly contested final of the afternoon, Gems Wellington International School (WIS) defeated Dubai British School 37-27 after holding a slender 17-15 lead at halftime, thanks to tries from Tristyn De Laaf, Aidan Veldsman and Tyrese Johnson.
In the second half, the WIS scrum steadied with Ryan Diprose, Johnathan Rath and Angelos Gaviotis all getting the better of their tough front row battle. The second row pairing worked tirelessly with Shehram Burney making some blockbusting runs through the middle of the pitch and Thomas Baltussen covering both sides of the pitch with his determined tackling.
Enrique Gonzales organised his forwards well and paired brilliantly.
The final play of the game saw prolific try scorer Tyrese Johnson produce one of his darting runs into space and sprint 50 metres to score under the posts ensuring the win was Wellington’s.
At the end, the organisers distributed prizes among the winners and also thanked 7he Sevens sports groundstaff and administrators for their generosity in sponsoring the event.
