The UAE's drive towards sustainability has been aided by a number of private and public projects that have taken off in recent years, and which are helping to achieve the sustainability goals set by the leadership of the country, officials said ahead of the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (Wetex 2019).
The 21st edition of the event will be under the theme 'At the Forefront of Sustainability' from October 21-23, 2019 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, alongside the 4th Dubai Solar Show. Organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), the event is being held under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; and under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of Dewa.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa, and founder and chairman of Wetex, on Sunday, announced that 2,350 exhibitors from 55 countries will take part in the event - a 10 per cent increase in participation over last year.
"Organising Wetex and the Dubai Solar Show, under the umbrella of Green Week, are aligned with UAE's wise leadership's vision to promote sustainable development and a green economy in the UAE, and help realise the UAE Centennial 2071, the UAE Vision 2021, the UAE Green Growth Strategy, the Dubai Plan 2021, and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, to make the emirate a global hub for clean energy and green economy and provide 75 per cent of Dubai's total power output from clean energy sources by 2050," Al Tayer said.
"Last year, the two exhibitions attracted 35,000 visitors from 53 countries, 75 sponsors and 2,100 exhibitors, covering 78,413 square metres. This year's Wetex is its biggest in its history, with 2350 exhibitors from 55 countries as well as 18 country pavilions covering 85,000 square metres. The exhibition has also attracted 75 sponsors and supporters, which emphasizes the exhibition's position as a forum that brings together governments, industry leaders, and investors from around the world," he added.
Speaking to the media, Al Tayer noted that the solar energy sector across the UAE has been witnessing accelerated growth, especially given the greater collaboration between the public and private sectors. He highlighted the success of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is the largest single-site solar park in the world based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, and one of the most ambitious sustainability projects in the region. When complete, the project will produce 5,000 MW by 2030 reducing 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions in the UAE annually. The 13MW photovoltaic first phase became operational in 2013. He also highlighted the success of Dewa's drive to increase the number of residential units fitted with solar panels in the UAE.
Wetex 2019 coincides with the 6th World Green Economy Summit (WGES), which is organised by Dewa and the World Green Economy Organisation, in collaboration with international partners. The event will be held on October 20-21, 2019, under the theme 'Innovative Technologies for a Sustainable Economy.'
