Dubai – More than 80 per cent of the household surveyed in the UAE are planning to improve living space his year and a significant number of respondents are ready to spend up to Dh10,000 to make indoor changes such as revamping kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.

This was revealed on Thursday in a first-of-its-kind project from a home improvement store in Dubai. The survey — conducted online — gathered responses from 1,112 participants across 13 different nationalities over a three-week period (March 3 – 22, 2015). It looked at four key areas of home improvement including: outdoor, indoor, do-it-yourself and paint.

Key findings

Nearly 69 per cent of respondents prefer to do home improvements themselves. Nearly 45 per cent said they research for ideas on home improvement in-store before shopping; followed by 21 per cent who do it online and 17.5 per cent who do it through social media.

Majority of respondents (83 per cent) said they were looking to make some sort of improvements to their home/living space this year. More than 46 per cent plan to spend between Dh1,000 and Dh5,000 to make improvements while 16 per cent said they would spend between Dh5,000 to Dh10,000. More than half (53.8 per cent) the respondents said they would be spending between Dh1,000 to Dh5000 to revamp the interiors.

Regarding indoor improvement 54 per cent of the respondents want to update their kitchen appliances followed by almost 40 per cent who would like to change their kitchen fittings; while 23 per cent said they would like to completely update their kitchen.

Around 60 per cent of the survey participants were looking to add accessories to their bathroom, followed by 30 per cent who wanted to update bathroom fittings.

In the bedroom/living room 46 per cent said they were looking to add new furniture, while 41 per cent said they were looking to paint their living room. The industry lacks customer-rich data which inspired us to create and conduct this survey that would gauge the pulse of the market, Al-Futtaim ACE general manager Wayne Cohen in a statement.

ACE also launched its Home Improvement Guide — a 52-page booklet packed with tips, ideas and inspiration. The annual guide features over 200 products with prices valid through to August 2015. A total of 200,000 guides will be delivered door-to-door across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
