I support the column 'Dark or fair, wear your skin colour with pride' (KT, Sept 3). It is surprising that even societies of lighter skin tones prefer to have white-toned skins. There is a sort of inferiority linked to being of darker shades of skin tone.
The cosmetic industry has focused on and is selling the notion of being fair to be lovely. This is unfortunate. Various factors in history as well as social subjugation have led to a warped thought process, sadly.
So, how does one reduce this bias? Focus on a healthy, clearer and brighter skin instead of the colour or shades of darkness; take cognizance of personal growth and abilities to develop confidence; and be open-minded when it comes to appreciating differences.
All levels of interaction, whether business or social, must be focused towards harmonising and diffusing differences of colour and prejudice.
I know it is a tall order, but we can each try at our own level, with the smallest of steps. Collectively it will make a difference.
