UAE debutant Tryster, ridden by William Buick, came with a late run to smash a field of ten runners in the 2000m Dubai Millennium Stakes in the seventh meeting of the 2016 Dubai World Cup Carnival at the Meydan racecourse here on Thursday.
The five-year-old son of former champion Shamardal, is trained by Charlie Appleby and raced by Godolphin, the powerful operation of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
"He is in a great form and did a very good job in the straight to move from last to first very easily," the winning jockey said.
Meanwhile, Charlie Appleby confirmed that the obvious option for the Tryster would be the $6m Dubai Turf (1800m) Group-1 on the Dubai World Cup night, and most probably via the 1800m Jebel Hatta Group-2 on the Super Saturday.
"He has apparently relished the surface and found the sprint when it mattered to win impressively," he added.
Stables companion Haafaguinea, ridden by Fredrik Tylicki, who made most of the trip, was overtaken Meadow Creek under Pat Dobbs, but he battled back to take second, as Sanshaawes was a neck back in fourth.
However, the night kicked off with the 1400m Purebred Arabians Bani Yas Gr-2, which was won by the UAE-bred AF Mayhmoon hands and heels under Paul Hanagan.
Trainer Musabah Al Muhairi commented: "This is his second start on dirt and I think he ran a cracking race and things would have not been bettered."
Bred by the leading UAE breeder Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda and raced in the blue silks of Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Mathmoon started well and tracked the pace setter Shateh as the duo kicked away from the rest of the field. Paul Hanagan was riding Mathmoon patiently before he asked him to improve and storm home unchallenged to emerge the easiest of winners across the line.
The second race, a 1400m TB Handicap was won by Fils Anges, ridden by Mickael Barzalona, for Bahraini trainer Ali Jan.
"Barzalona is a great international professional jockey who gave his mount a great ride," the winning trainer said. "He came from off the pace to lead in the concluding stages and wins well," he added.
In the 1600m TB Handicap, Maftool appeared from nowhere to stun a strong field of top milers to complete a double for the owner Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and trainer Musabah Al Muhairi.
The 1000m turf TB Handicap was convincingly won by Sir Mximilian under a strong drive of leading jockey Pat Dobbs, ahead of Roicead, ridden by Christopher Hayes.
