The duo completed a double after winning the Jebel Ali Mile Prep, the second highlight of the afternoon aboard Otaared.
The six-year-old gelded son of Red Ransom is raced by Shaikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. “He’s a Group-1 horse,” commented a delighted trainer Dhruba Selvaratnam after the win.
Engineer Sharief Al Halawani, who received the trophy on behalf of the owner, said: “He did it very nicely. He has been working very well and he loves the surface here. After talking to the owner we will decide the horse’s next target.” Early in the afternoon, Jebel Ali debutant Mureb got up very strongly under Patrick Cosgrave to land the TB Maiden opening race on the card for trainer Mubarak bin Shafya.
All eyes were on the Satish Seemar-trained Lord Tiger on account of his splendid performance at Meydan on two occasions, but Tiger Hill’s son apparently didn’t appreciate the new surface and finished nine lengths back in third place.
Shafya said Mureb did perform satisfactorily at Meydan on debut, but he liked the hilly track and picked up nicely. In the second race, the Jebel Ali Mile Prep, top Irish jockey Kieren Fallon partnered Otaared to victory in tight finish ahead of the mount of Ahmed Ajtebi, Glen Nevis and early leader Step In Line under Carlos Sanchez. Jet Express, ridden by Royston Ffrench, was a close fourth at the busy end.
Step In Line left the machines very quickly and set a steady pace to lead by more than ten lengths when the pack hit the home straight. But Fallon quickened to close the gap and take the lead in the last strides to prevail by
half a length. Step In Line lost second on the line to finish third. Patrick Dobbs, aboard Hunter’s Glen, won the battle up the hill from the mount of Kieren Fallon Shemoli and Tayyab cruised to an easy victory under Wayne Smith in the fifth race. The final race was won by Knight’s Way, ridden by Carelos Sanchez and trained by Abdulla bin Huzaim.
