The 39-year-old Italian struck first on 4-5 favourite White Moonstone in the second race, the Group One Fillies’ Mile, and followed up with an easy success on 7-1 favourite Redford in the Challenge Cup handicap.
The former champion thrilled the crowd with another Group One triumph on 9-2 chance Poet’s Voice in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and then ran out a comfortable winner on 7-4 favourite Rainfall in the October Stakes.
Although he could only finish third in the final race his four-timer still worked out at cumulative odds of 217-1.
Dettori told BBC: “I really can’t believe I’ve won the two big (Group One) races today. It’s been a long time. I’m full of emotion and I just don’t know what to say. Ascot has been fantastic to me.”
Dettori’s record-breaking afternoon in 1996 sent bookmakers scurrying for cover and cost the industry over 30 million pounds ($47 million).
The feat became known as “Frankie’s Magnificent Seven” and as a tangible reminder Fujiyama Crest, the seventh and final winner that day, is now a family pet on land by his home near Newmarket.
