The Indian government will award 100 Emirati, and UAE-based non-Indian students full-scholarships if they wish to study Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (Ayush) in public deemed universities across India. In a bid to spread ancient traditional Indian systems of medicine in the region, this is one of the first initiatives being undertaken by the Indian Ayush ministry. The ministry is also in talks with the UAE Ministry of Health (MoH) to set up an Ayush chair in Dubai.
Speaking to Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the Ayush conference and exhibition, Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of Ayush, India, said: "The application details and processes to different Indian universities offering courses in Siddha and Ayurveda will be provided by the Consulate General of India in Dubai, and interested students can approach them for admissions and details."
In a meeting with Dr Amin Hussain Al Amiri, assistant undersecretary of Public Health and Policy and Licensing sector, UAE, the Indian ministry members put forward several proposals to bolster the presence of Ayush in India.
"We've received extremely positive responses, and we are very excited about the prospect and future of Ayush in the region. The setting-up of the chair and student scholarships are only two of the first initiatives. There is much more to come," said Naik. The ministry has also floated ideas to set up homeopathy colleges in the UAE and have requested to start the manufacture of traditional medicines in UAE as well.
The team also floated suggestions to hold the UAE Ministry of Health examination for practitioners to write the traditional, complementary and alternative medical (TCAM) in India.
Dr Amiri suggested that Ayush practitioners are welcome to set up shop in UAE as long as correct protocols and channels are followed.
