Almost four months have passed since Devisri, a six-year-old girl, died and saved the lives of three others after her parents donated her organs. Her parents, Arun Kumar Tavva and Keerti, are on a mission to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation. They shared their experiences at a seminar organised by Indian Ladies Association, with participation from doctors of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and members from various women's groups.
"She was our only child. We lost our beautiful angel in July this year. She suffered from pulmonary hypertension and heart issues. Her heart used to beat twice more than the normal rate. We tried many hospitals and medications, but in vain," Kumar said.
The parents believe Devisri's life had a purpose, which she fulfilled by saving three lives.
"Her birth and death were on the same date. It was a miracle. We had just celebrated her sixth birthday. Later, she was rushed to hospital as she struggled to breathe. She was declared brain dead. After she left us, we decided to donate her organs. It was a proud moment, but a difficult decision to make. We can see her soul in three other lives. She has left a legacy," Kumar said as Keerti and the audience became emotional.
Kumar felt every person should have a purpose.
"People don't even talk to each other. We should have empathy for others. What you earn doesn't matter but what you give back to others does. We now lead a campaign to donate organs. I have taken my campaign to school, office, hospitals here and in India. I encourage everyone to spread the word. Don't waste time on phone chatting but please speak to one person a day about organ donation. Let's make good use of our lives and take up a noble cause."
