Various departments of the Dubai Municipality are cracking down on illegal trade in Dubai. Surprise inspection campaigns in the past few days saw officials clamping down on illegal trade of sharks, food items and tobacco (paan) products from different parts of the emirate.
The Environment Department confiscated a large number of sharks from the fish market in Deira earlier in the week. The raid exposed the illegal trade of shark in violation of the Ministerial Decree No. 500 for the year 2014 regarding hunting and trading sharks during this period of the year.
Dozens of sharks with their fins cut off were disposed off in coordination with the Food Safety Department, the municipality said.
In another inspection by the Waste Management Department, the municipality seized and confiscated 80kgs of paan from illegal vendors in Ayaal Nasser area. The operation was conducted in cooperation with the Assets Management Department of the municipality and Dubai Police.
On Friday, the municipality's Environmental Emergency Office organised a campaign to raid random markets in Jebel Ali. Tonnes of food products including fruits and vegetables were confiscated from these sites where hawkers sell these products for cheap rates to the labourers in the area.
The good ones among the seized goods were handed over to the Red Crescent Society for distribution to the needy.
The operation was done in cooperation with the Dubai Police, Red Crescent Society and the Waste Management Department in Dubai Municipality. Updates about all these clampdowns were posted on the municipality's various social media channels.
Officials were not immediately available for comments.
