Ali confident despite setback against Iraq

The UAE Olympic national team head coach Mahdi Ali thanked the players despite going 0-2 down to less fancied Iraqi counterparts at Khalifa Stadium on Sunday.

“The players did well but it was not their day,” Akli told newsmen during a post match conference.

“This group of players did a lot for the country’s football and should not be destroyed,” he said.

Regarding the chances of the team in the chase of the only berth reserved for the Group-B in the 2012 London Games finals, Ali pledged to fight to the last minute to realise the Olympic dream.

“We need to improve and we will work hard to return to the competition,” he promised.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi coach Radhi Shinaishil said the game was very tough and the UAE boys were not easy at all.

“We have won the game, but we admit that the UAE national team is very promising and the future is very bright,” he said.

“All the four teams are in with a chance to go into the finals. There’s nothing easy and there are still nine points to be won,” he added.
