An ancient Chinese porcelain bowl fetched its clueless owners £220,000 (Dh980,000 approx) when they took the rare piece to an auctioneer in Bath, Somerset, while clearing out their house.
The bowl dates from between 1722 to 1735 and is from the reign of the 18th century Chinese Emperor Yongzheng. The small blue and white bowl had been sitting on a shelf for years until its owners decided to auction it while moving house. Experts estimated the bowl to fetch £20,000 to £30,000 but it eventually sold for £220,000 in a 'fierce telephone bidding'.
Auctioneer Ivan Street from Aldridges of Bath was quoted as saying in BBC, "She knew it was a lovely thing but no more than that. The sale surpassed all expectations." Street added the porcelain bowl is particularly valuable as the Chinese Emperor Yongzheng's reign was short, only 13 years, meaning not many items are dated from that period.
The news made its way to Facebook where Street's post read: 'Sold For £220,000. A new record for Aldridges of Bath, this fine and rare early 18th century Yongzheng mark & period celadon bowl attracted a huge amount of interest in the lead up to today's auction'. The post further read: 'Fierce telephone bidding took the starting bid of £50,000 up to the final hammer price, selling for 10 times it's original estimate of £20,000-30,000'.
