Authorities in Fujairah will be ramping up inspections of commercial and industrial establishments following the massive fire that gutted a supermarket restaurant in the emirate's Al Maddab area, the civil defence team said on Tuesday.
The blaze erupted at Thattukada Restaurant on the first floor of Sajidha Hypermarket on Monday morning, with firefighters having to evacuate at least 100 people. No injuries were reported, and the fire was promptly put under control.
Initial investigations showed it was caused by a short circuit in an exhaust fan and flames quickly spread to other electrical outlets, said Col Khalid Rabie Al Hamoudi, deputy director of the Fujairah Civil Defence.
The incident prompted the civil defence team to launch an intensified monitoring campaign, warning establishments of the dangers of violating fire safety regulations, the officer said.
He also urged owners of commercial outlets to instal safety devices and put all necessary measures in place.
"It is critical for all outlets to instal smoke detectors to avoid such fire incidents and protect lives and property," Col Al Hamoudi added.
He praised the efforts of firefighters and the rest of the emergency team who handled the incident and ensured everyone's safety.
