Over 2,000 excited teachers gathered at the induction programme organised by the GEMS Education Group on Thursday,.
GEMS Education officially welcomed 1,800 new teachers to its network of schools during its GEMS Awareness Day -one of the largest education induction events of its kind in the country.
The annual event gives an opportunity to the new teachers, mostly from outside the UAE, to familiarise themselves with the group's senior leadership team. The teachers also got a chance to learn more about the UAE and its culture and values through presentations and workshops. The various sessions also covered values-led education, child safeguarding, wellness, inclusion, disruption in technology, sustainability and finance.
Bringing with her years of experience in forensic science, Alethea Vaz from Mumbai is excited to start her first job in the UAE as a teacher at Kindergarten Starters in a curriculum development role. Vaz said she felt there was a gap about forensic sciences awareness among youngsters. "Integrating forensics into education at the nascent stage is important as children like to reason and think. Forensic sciences focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and lot of reasoning. I wanted to have these skills not as extra curricular activities but as part of the curriculum. This chance was given to me here in the UAE. I am really looking forward to experience the multi-culturalism and globalisation. I chose GEMS because it is a very global group; I love their mission and their philanthropic aspect."
Jordanian Jocelin Hattar is all set to join GEMS Al Khaleej National School as an MYP maths teacher. "I am aware that the responsibilities of a teacher do not end with the school day. As an educator, I have been looking for a school with an outstanding reputation. I can't wait to be part of GEMS."
Starting on a solemn note, CEO Dino Varkey eulogised a couple of GEMS teachers who had passed away recently and observed a minute of silence as a tribute to them.
"Our greatest focus will always be our students, and the positive impact they can make on the world. This impact will only be seen by parents and others decades later. However, it is the work you do in the classroom every day that will have the most profound influence on our collective future. Create moments that matter for the students in your care, to enable hope and possibility for a better world. I know that all 1,800 of you share our passion and purpose to deliver a quality education to every child," said Dino Varkey.
