The 56-year-old Indian worker allegedly had a fight with his compatriot over the remote control of the television set following which he stabbed the compatriot with a kitchen knife. He faced a murder attempt charge in the Court of First Instance. The incident happened in their accommodation in Investment Park in Jebel Ali in August.
A police sergeant said he saw the victim lying hurt that day in his room. He was holding a piece of cloth over his bleeding abdomen and was in pain.
The victim, an insulation worker, aged 52, told the investigating prosecutor that he had a disagreement with the defendant because of the remote control. The accused got mad when the complainant asked him to buy a new remote because he had spoiled the one they had.
He said the accused brandished a knife which he was hiding under his bed and stabbed him in his abdomen and also injured him behind the ear.
Another Indian worker, 29, said the defendant and the victim had a brawl that day over the remote control and they were both drunk.
The defendant then assaulted the victim with the knife he had bought earlier since the two used to have frequent fights.
The worker confirmed that the defendant had previously threatened to assault the victim if he troubled him. He said he saw the defendant stab the victim and flee the room. The worker informed the watchman who called the police.
The police arrested the defendant outside his accommodation. He was scared and tense and admitted to the charges.
According to the forensic doctor, the victim’s wound was deep and could have been fatal if he had not been rushed to the hospital.
